Lake Garda, or more properly "Benaco", is the largest in Italy, and has two different environments.

The northern coast, narrow as a fjord between the rocky slopes of the Prealps, with rocky or gravelly coasts, wooded slopes and small, generally less crawded villages. The southern part of the lake instead presents soft gulfs where the Mediterranean climate favors the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards, an environment much more similar to the Mediterranean than to the Alpine one.

The Benaco has always been a "fluid" border between the Italian civilization in the south, represented by the Roman archaeological sites, the beautiful frescoed churches, by the Venetian villages, and, on the northern side, the German civilization, represented by the majestic castles that recall the story of Queen Adelaide and King Otto, or the numerous samples of Austrian-Hungarian Belle Epoque hotels.
